Nye County School District Sets New Ambitious Goals

The Nye County School District (NCSD) Board of Trustees has adopted a refined set of strategic goals, marking a significant step toward enhancing student learning and fostering a thriving educational environment. These goals, developed through a collaborative process, guided by the 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) framework, emphasize clarity, measurability, and accountability.

“As a new Board member, I felt it was critical to ensure our goals are not only aspirational but also actionable,” said Trustee Chelsea Silva. “I asked a question in one of the Board meetings that got the ball rolling [to update the goals], ‘How are these measured?’.”

“The format [for creating the new goals] was such that every person gave voice to what we were trying to accomplish, speaking from their experience and knowledge of the school district.” Added Silva, “It was awesome to see the goals come together. Not only did we determine Board of Trustees Goals, but we were also able to determine District level objectives. This really set us up nicely for the beginning of the 24-25 school year.”

Key Goals & Objectives

  • Academic Excellence: Elevate achievement and support lifelong learning through a results-focused environment, measurable goals, and a cohesive instructional framework.

    • By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, 80% of instructional staff will utilize essential standards to guide instruction, as measured by Common Formative Assessments.

  • Culture of Learning: Cultivate a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment by supporting staff, fostering family and community engagement, and maintaining well-maintained school facilities.

    • By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, 100% of school sites will improve cleanliness and physical safety through the implementation of district-wide guidelines for property maintenance as measured by quarterly staff surveys.

  • Resource Optimization: Strategically allocate time, funds, technology, and expertise to maximize benefits for all students.

    • By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, a pilot program to bolster induction and support of new hires will be launched, with success measured by staff retention rates.

"We are excited about the potential these goals hold for our students and our community," said Dr. Joseph Gent, Superintendent of NCSD. "By working together with clear direction, we can achieve remarkable outcomes."

The Board is committed to transparently monitoring progress on these goals and providing regular updates to the community. "The district goals will be presented to the school administrators who will determine goals at the school levels. From there the school will share goals with the teachers, and so on down to the students. Each group will set a cadence of accountability, whether that is weekly, monthly or quarterly, to report on how they are doing in their progress to meet or exceed the goals that are set. The Board plans to schedule at least a quarterly report from the district. This report will be given at a designated monthly Board meeting."

With these new goals in place, NCSD envisions a future where all students are empowered to reach their full potential. "I see increased unity and a shared drive for success," said Trustee Silva. "In five years, I see the district well above where we are now in terms of state rankings. I see increased unity and the drive for success from the students all the way up to the Board level. The passion and desire is there and I believe that with these goals, we will see success."
