Talk to your children about online safety and the dangers of talking to strangers on video chat. Consider parental controls on devices to restrict access to age-inappropriate apps.

Parents and Guardians,

The parent of children in our district sent us information about an app being popularized by TikTok and Reels. It is an Android app but can be accessed through the website on an iPhone or computer.

Monkey.app allows users to connect with strangers through quick video chats. While it may seem like a harmless way to meet new people, there are serious concerns for children's safety. The app's lax age verification lets young users bypass restrictions, exposing them to inappropriate content, including sexual themes and cyberbullying.

The parent who reported the app told this story of manipulation: "On one of these video chats my daughter shared with a grown man she stated only he could end the call and she could not get out of this video chat without the man ending the call first." (Tech note: This as a blatant manipulation tactic because all apps and websites can be forced to quit by the user.)

We have taken measures to make sure this app and website cannot be access through the NCSD network or on NCSD devices.
